A while back I mentioned to my buddy Shawn that I was going to use lead to add weight to the rudder and leeboard so they would stay down on their own. I was planning to try to get old tire weights from a tire shop, but it turns out Shawn has piles of lead bars in his dad’s basement from when his dad and grandfather used to solder copper gutters with molten lead. Now the boat will have a little bit of Shawn’s family history built right into it.
